Roll Stock Film Guide
The correct unwind is the one that feeds the printed web, sealant side and registration mark into your packaging machine in the required orientation.

Direct Answer
Do not approve unwind direction from a number alone. Suppliers may use different chart conventions. Confirm the roll by looking at the actual machine web path, whether the print is wound inside or outside, which edge leads, where the registration mark must run and which surface must face the sealing jaws.
The Four Pieces of an Unwind Specification
Print wound in or out
State whether the printed surface faces the roll core or the outside of the finished roll according to the approved construction.
Leading-edge orientation
Identify which edge of the artwork enters the machine first when the web is threaded along the real web path.
Sealant-side orientation
Confirm which side must face the forming and sealing surfaces. For unprinted film, this may be the critical winding instruction.
Registration-mark position
State the eye-mark side, contrast, size and repeat relationship required by the machine sensor and artwork.
Why Unwind Numbers Are Not Universal
An unwind number alone is not enough to specify printed packaging film. It is only useful when both parties reference the same numbered chart: converters may combine print orientation, wound-in or wound-out status and eye-mark position differently.
Use one shared roll reference. Record the chart supplier, name, revision and code. Include the machine web-path reference and state the viewing direction used for left and right. Confirm the print-facing or film-construction reference, leading artwork edge, registration-mark side and product-contact or sealant side with the converter and equipment owner before final approval. A number alone is not a universal orientation or machine-compatibility approval.
Download the roll orientation reference (PDF, 1 page). An offline preparation sheet, not an approved production specification.
Confirm Unwind at the Packaging Machine
- Identify the exact machine and package format.Record the machine model, forming direction and intended pack dimensions.
- Trace the web path.Start at the unwind shaft and follow the film through rollers, printer or coder, sensor, former and sealing station.
- Mark the sealant side.Confirm which surface must contact itself at the longitudinal and cross seals.
- Place a printed mock-up on the path.Use arrows for web travel, product-facing side, leading edge and the desired front-panel orientation.
- Confirm the registration mark.Match its side and repeat to the actual sensor position and machine requirement.
- Approve a shared diagram.Attach the converter chart plus the buyer-marked web-path reference to the purchase specification.
Unwind Errors and Their Consequences
| Error | Possible result | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong leading edge | Front panel or opening feature appears upside down or in the wrong sequence | Approve a web-travel arrow and marked package mock-up |
| Wrong wound side | Sealant or printed surface reaches the machine in the wrong orientation | State print-in/out and sealant-in/out on the roll specification |
| Eye mark on wrong edge | The registration sensor cannot reliably read the intended mark | Confirm sensor side, mark geometry, contrast and repeat |
| Repeat or cut relationship wrong | Artwork, seal or cut shifts relative to the formed package | Confirm finished length, repeat length and machine setup together |
| Roll dimensions incompatible | The roll cannot be mounted or runs with avoidable handling issues | Confirm web width, core, maximum roll diameter and roll weight |

Buyer FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is packaging film unwind direction?
It describes how the roll feeds into the machine, including the leading artwork edge, print wound in or out, sealant-side orientation and any registration-mark position.
Are unwind numbers the same for every supplier?
No. Numbering conventions can differ. Always approve the supplier chart together with a marked web-path or package-orientation diagram.
How can I confirm unwind direction accurately?
Stand at the actual machine, trace the web from the unwind shaft to the former and seals, mark web travel and sealant side, then approve a printed mock-up or diagram.
Does unprinted film still need a winding instruction?
Yes. The sealant side, web dimensions, core and winding quality may still need to match the machine even when no print orientation is involved.
Why is registration-mark position part of the unwind specification?
The machine sensor must see the mark on the correct side and at the correct repeat relationship so cutting and sealing register to the artwork.
What machine data should I send for printed roll stock?
Send the machine make and model, web-path reference, pack format, web width, repeat, sealant side, unwind diagram, eye-mark requirement, core, roll diameter and quantity.
Confirm Your Film Unwind Direction
Send the machine model, web-path reference, pack dimensions, web width, repeat, sealant side, eye-mark requirement, core and roll limits before artwork approval.
FROM UNWIND REVIEW TO A ROLL FILM INQUIRY
Send the machine details with your roll film inquiry
Use the roll stock information checklist when requesting custom printed roll stock film. Include your machine make and model, a web-path photo or diagram, finished pack dimensions, film width and print repeat. Add the core size, maximum roll diameter or weight, order quantity and destination where known.
For unwind review, attach the chart you are using and mark the web-travel direction, leading artwork edge, print-in or print-out position, sealant side and registration-mark side. Include the matching diagram with any unwind number so the orientation can be reviewed in context.
