Choose a coffee bag by the actual roasted coffee, target fill weight and bag geometry—not by a nominal capacity label alone.
The Short Answer
A bag described as “250 g” or “12 oz” is not a universal set of dimensions. Roasted coffee density, whole bean or ground format, roast profile, bag style, zipper position, valve position and desired headspace all affect the final size. Use a nominal fill weight to shortlist a format, then approve the dimensions with a physical fill test using the actual product.
Start With Four Inputs
Target net weight
State the declared fill weight and whether the pack will contain whole bean or ground coffee.
Actual coffee
Provide the roast level, grind format and a representative product sample when possible because bulk density changes the occupied volume.
Bag style
Flat bottom, side gusset and stand-up pouches distribute the same volume differently and create different shelf proportions.
Required features
Confirm the zipper, one-way degassing valve, tear notch, seal area and the headspace needed by the filling process.
Common Stand-Up Pouch Reference Sizes
Use W × H + Bottom Gusset notation. The final number identifies the expanded bottom-gusset dimension.

How Bag Style Changes the Fit
Flat bottom
A structured base and defined side panels create a stable presentation. It is useful when shelf presence and a box-like shape are priorities.
Side gusset
Side gussets expand as coffee is filled and are widely used for classic coffee packaging. The top closure and seal plan must be confirmed with the filling method.
Stand-up pouch
A bottom gusset supports a lighter, flexible retail format. Zipper position and usable internal volume should be checked during the fill test.
Measure and trial-fill your coffee bag
Use a real sample and the actual whole bean or ground coffee. Measure the empty bag without stretching it, then trial-fill the target net weight. Keep the zipper usable and reserve the top area required by your sealing process.
For a stand-up pouch, record W × H + Bottom Gusset. Bottom Gusset means the expanded bottom-gusset dimension: +6 cm does not mean 6 cm on each side. Do not apply the stand-up reference sizes above to flat-bottom or side-gusset formats.
